Duties of the Treasurer
The Treasurer receives, manages, and invests all revenue received by County Government. These revenues include real estate taxes, business personal property taxes, public service taxes(utilities), fire district revenues, Oklahoma Tax Commission payments and various other sources of revenue. Our primary responsibility is to collect taxes certified by the County Assessor from the assessment valuations placed on real estate and personal property in the county. The Treasurer mails tax statements, collects property taxes and apportions the taxes to the taxing jurisdictions. (school districts, cities, towns, the county, special districts, etc.) This money is apportioned and disbursed according to budgets approved by the County Excise Board.
Tax collections are balanced on a daily, monthly and year to date basis. This allows for the investment of monies to be made with more accuracy. All special assessments such as sewer, water, weed, cleaning, paving and nuisance abatement taxes that are originally assessed by cities and towns in the County are certified to the County Treasurer for collection. They are placed as a lien on the real estate account of the taxpayer.
The County Treasurer is the official custodian of all funds for the County and serves as the treasurer for any schools and Vo-Tech institutions that do not have their own treasurer, if so elected. All warrants and vouchers (a.k.a. checks) for County departments are registered and maintained through the Treasurer's office as well.
The Treasurer's office also manages the liquidation of County owned property. These are properties acquired at the annual sale of real estate for delinquent taxes. The Treasurer may sell these pieces of property upon approval of the Board of County Commissioners.
